Two Muskies Bite at the Exact Same Time

As musky anglers it is something we have talked about many times, what would we do if we had two muskies bite at the same time. Well this past July we had the opportunity to find out.

Everything set up perfect for the evening bite to be a memorable one on lake of the woods. The wind started to die a bit, the evening sun was setting, and the full moon was starting to rise. This is one of my favorite situations as we have had a lot of action when the sunset corresponds to moon rise in the past. We also like wind during the day but prefer it to lay down a little going into sunset.

We moved these two fish earlier in the day on the same complex but on different rocks, the fish were about 50 yards away from each other earlier. Since we had marked several other fish on this complex throughout the week we made the decision to go back on them at sunset. I was throwing one of my favorite topwater prop bait, a fat bastard, and Spencer was throwing a unique bucktail, a beaver's bait Quad B.

My fish ate the topwater way out on the cast when I hear Spencer yelling "double, double, double". We always talked about netting the bigger fish first and since Spencer's fish was pushing 50" we decided to net his. Unfortunately, this big fish had other plans and not playing it out cost us the chance to net a double as it changed directions when Jeremy wanted to net it and popped off. We were fortunate the bait just missed Jeremy's face as it came flying out of the water. I was able to guide my 40" musky into the net shortly after.

I think if we were to do it over again we would net the one that is ready instead of trying to horse the bigger fish in. Hopefully we are lucky enough to get this chance again as Lake of the Woods can be a magical place to fish muskies.
