Opening Day in Wisconsin

After a long off-season, it's great to head out to Northern Wisconsin since the season kicks off before the Minnesota opener. We hit the water before sunrise on a lake known for early-season muskies, thanks to its shallow northern bay that's usually packed with weeds.
We spent the first half of the day drifting through the shallow weeds and contacted some smaller fish using small jerk baits and small bucktails. As the day progressed we saw fewer and fewer fish on each pass.
I decided to switch up our tactic and focus on steep breaks near shallow flats. We found some nice bait pods and fish hanging on the sharp breaks. It didn't take long to find active fish. My partner had a musky bite the tail of a regular sized swimmin' dawg with a Kramer Bros. Revo Attachment on the front. About five minutes later I caught a small musky on a mid size Medusa.

The wind presented challenges in maintaining control of the boat for the remainder of the day. We alternated between steep breaks and shallow weeds, though with limited action. Given that fish can be dispersed throughout the lake during the early season, I was wanted to explore all possibilities. Overall it was a fun day on the water and a good warm up for the Minnesota Musky Opener.
