Imagine a scenario where the skies are painted in a brilliant blue hue, devoid of a single wisp of cloud, and the water stretches out like a tranquil mirror—conditions that, at first glance, might seem less than ideal for pursuing the elusive muskellunge. For many anglers, these conditions are less than favorable, as muskies, known for their elusive nature, often become more cautious and selective in such clear and calm settings. The absence of wind further compounds the challenge, leaving the water undisturbed and the muskies on high alert.

In these conditions I have had good luck with banging smaller crankbaits into the shallow rocks. That morning I was using a baby depth raider with little success. The other option we like is burning a bucktail to get reaction strike. Jeremy chose wisely as he was burning a Musky Frenzy ic9 over the shallow underwater point. The big musky engaged on the bait, breaking the surface with its wake. It kicked its mighty tail for a couple turns of the figure 8 without biting. Jeremy kept his fast cadence and got the beast to strike on one of the outside turns. After several mighty headshakes I was able to stretch out and net the trophy predator. Check out the video!

I wish we could pick the weather for our annual trip but we have learned to battle through the adversity and keep casting because on Lake of the Woods any cast can produce something amazing.
